Hi there. I recently purchased a 201 SLM, what size and type of generator can I run it on? Thank you.
Canaweld Multi-Process 201 SLM
Purchased a 201 SLM. The manual for the welder says that at max output, the welder requires 25.3 amps of 240 volt to run Flux core wire.
Since I am running flux core wire, and my generator producs 30 amps of 240v at the outlet, that should be sufficient.
I tried running the welder, even set for 1/8 or thinner, and when I try to strike the arc, 70% of the time, the welder shuts off. The generator doesn't change from idle, and the breaker doesn't throw. So the welder cannot be demanding too much power. The generator makes 7200 watts continous on 240 at the outlet. Even at max power, the welders spec sheet says it only requires 6000+/- watts. But since the welder is shutting off, that suggests there is a different issue.
I called tech at Canaweld and a gentleman told me that I need at least 12000 watts to run the 210 SLM, but when I asked him why none of the specs in the literature confirm that, he couldn't explain further. He just kept repeating "you need 12000 watts". If I needed 12000 watts, the 201 should be throwing the breaker on the generator.
I hooked a Miller 211 to the same outlet, and cranked it, and ran a 6" bead before throwing the breaker. That was asking toom much of the generator. So there has to be something else that the 201 doesn't like.
If someone can please elaborate on what it is that the welder doesn't like about the power, I would really appreciate it. Using it mobile with a generator was 50% of the reason I bought this welder, and this is going to impact my ability to work.
Please advise.

Hey there, you’ll need a generator with at least 7,500 watts (7.5 kW) and stable voltage output to run the Canaweld Multi-Process 201 SLM. An inverter generator with these specifications is ideal for consistent power supply.
