Dry ice pellets are solid carbon dioxide (CO₂) shaped into small cylindrical pieces. They are used in several industries because they are extremely cold (−78.5 °C / −109.3 °F) and sublimate directly into gas without leaving liquid behind. Common uses include:
1. Refrigeration & Shipping
- Keeping perishable food, medical samples, and pharmaceuticals cold during transport.
- Ideal for items that can’t be exposed to water from melting ice.
2. Special Effects
-
Creating thick, low-lying fog for theater, concerts, films, and Halloween displays (by adding to hot water).
3. Industrial Cleaning (Dry Ice Blasting)
- Pellets are blasted at surfaces to remove dirt, paint, grease, or residues.
- Non-abrasive, non-conductive, and leaves no secondary waste since CO₂ sublimates.
4. Scientific & Laboratory Uses
- Flash-freezing biological samples.
- Preserving temperature-sensitive chemicals.
5. Food & Beverage Applications
- Carbonating drinks or making instant ice cream.
- Creating dramatic fog effects for cocktails or desserts (requires strict safety precautions).
6. Pest Control & Agriculture
-
Flushing rodents from burrows or controlling insect infestations by replacing oxygen with CO₂.
