Product Overview

Our 98/2 Argon/Oxygen Stianless MIX A AO2 Shielding Gas Blend is a high-purity, specialty mix engineered specifically for high-efficiency MIG (GMAW) welding of stainless steels. By combining 98% pure Argon with a precise 2% addition of Oxygen, this gas mixture overcomes the sluggish arc characteristics of pure argon without causing excessive surface oxidation.

Designed primarily for spray-transfer and pulsed-spray MIG welding, this blend improves arc stability and dramatically lowers liquid metal surface tension. This allows molten stainless steel droplets to flow smoothly and wash neatly into the joint toes, producing clean, flat, high-strength welds with minimal post-weld discoloration.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Enhanced Weld Pool Fluidity: The 2% oxygen addition acts as an arc stabilizer, reducing liquid surface tension so the weld pool washes smoothly into sidewalls without undercutting.

  • Preserves Corrosion Resistance: Low oxygen levels keep oxide scale to an absolute minimum, protecting the underlying chromium content and reducing acid-pickling and wire-brushing cleanup.

  • Optimized for Spray & Pulsed Transfer: Enables smooth, low-spatter spray transfer at lower voltage thresholds, keeping heat input manageable on thin-to-medium plate.

  • Superior Bead Profile: Produces flat, smooth weld faces with fine tie-in, avoiding the steep, high-crown beads typically seen when MIG welding stainless with improper gas mixes.

Primary Welding Applications

Material Grade Thickness Range Best Used For
Austenitic Stainless Steel (304, 304L, 316, 316L) 1/8 inch (3 mm) and thicker
Food & beverage processing equipment, pharmaceutical piping, and kitchen fixtures.
Ferritic / Martensitic Stainless (409, 430) Medium to heavy plate
Automotive exhaust systems, catalytic converter shells, and industrial mufflers.
High-Speed Spray/Pulse MIG Multi-pass & robotic joints
Structural stainless steel framing, tanks, pressure vessels, and marine hardware.

Note: Not recommended for short-circuit MIG transfer on thin stainless sheet metal (use a Helium Tri-Mix like 90% He / 7.5% Ar / 2.5% $\text{CO}_2$ instead to prevent burn-through).

⚠️ Safety & Handling Information

  • Storage: Secure cylinders upright in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from high traffic and heat sources.

  • Ventilation: High-voltage spray welding on stainless steel generates chromium oxides in weld fumes. Always utilize local exhaust ventilation or a personal respirator system.

  • Asphyxiant Hazard: Argon-based mixtures displace oxygen in low or enclosed spaces. Ensure adequate room air exchange during operation.
